This one has also been problematic. I just don’t know what to do with it, though now it does seem to be making some positive progress towards something… I’m just not sure what. It is making me crave buttercreme frosting!

This is one of my problem drawings. I can identify an elephant, yes, but draw one? Ha! That’s funny! Like hilarious! I drew the first draft of this totally freehand, not using any references. This time though, I Googled an elephant photo that was in more or less the same pose and saw some serious errors in my first drawing. The neck was too long and the line of the back was totally off. I think I have that fixed, as well as the color being a bit more realistic now. I also made the eyes smaller, though eventually they will need redone completely. This is the first of my “$5.00 portraits”. Here’s how she described herself. “I am a 30 yr old white female I am about 5’4″ 160lbs I am a single parent so my bigest passion is my kids but I also enjoy photography. I will be starting college soon. I’m an animal lover, love to dance, go for walks, camping, long drives to nowhere etc.” I focused on the photography and outdoorsy aspects of it, and took a wild guess at what she might look like aside from height/weight/proportion. Yes, I couldn’t manage to pick a hair color. Be glad I didn’t go really crazy and make it pink and blue! hehe You want your picture drawn in return for a $5.00 PayPal donation? Make your donation, and after I receive it, I’ll email you for some information about you. Tell me a bit about yourself, and I’ll get to work. I’ll draw your portrait in Adobe Illustrator, using my best judgement and perception of you based on what you’ve told me. Assume I will put about an hour into your portrait, give or take 15 minutes. So, send me your donation, which is approximately 1% of my monthly living expenses, tell me the things you think are important about you, (name, age, gender, favorite hobbies/pastimes, race, height, weight, whatever you deem important) and I’ll create a masterpiece. Want to see an example? Look no further! Here’s one right now! This person described herself as “I am a 30 yr old white female I am about 5’4″ 160lbs I am a single parent so my bigest passion is my kids but I also enjoy photography. I will be starting college soon. I’m an animal lover, love to dance, go for walks, camping, long drives to nowhere etc.” I decided to focus on the photography and outdoors angle, since I’m not very good at drawing people. I know, and I’m offering to do portraits? Ha! And yes, I know that camera would not and could not produce Polaroids. But it was fun to draw them. Click to enlarge the image. This is another one I really didn’t like. It was supposed to be a doodle (Whoops! Forgot to add the text back on it! I’ll have to do that next time!) but it just looked like crap. The good thing is doodles often become full-blown drawings given time to evolve, and this one will hopefully do that. There’s a lot to be done here before it matches what I see in my head, but it’s already making great progress. This one will probably require the most work of any of them, but I’m making progress. Today I worked on my Grandma, giving her body a more realistic shape. I also gave some sparkle to her and my Mom’s eyes, and added some detail lines to both of them. The next trip through I will work on myself, and do a few small details to the ones that are more finished. I still need to draw hands for my Mom, and the other people in this need a ton of work- clownish doesn’t even begin to describe how they look right now. This one received a lot of tiny details- lines showing the collarbone, wrinkles and strained areas on the dress, more detail to the pumpkin (which I am still not happy with). I added some shadows to the bricks to give them a little depth, and added a darker center to the fireplace’s insides. I also updated the text, using a font I believe is called Decayed for most of the text because fairy tales are never as happy as we want to believe they are. This one still has a long way to go, but it’s rapidly getting better. I fixed the ears, lowering them to align with the nose like they actually do on someone’s face, and fixed the arms, adding hands as well. The eyes were replaced with better models, and I fixed the sleeves and the neckline of the uniform top. I also changed the font of the speech text, though I forgot to change the bottom text as well. The urge to add wild colored wall paper is strong- after all, we never see the actual bathrooms in the Enterprise at any time. Just that little sink. |
