This one was a tough one, but after letting it sit for a while and not thinking about it, I actually kind of like it, though it is making me crave cake.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas (and I’m not big on the holiday altogether) is the stockings stuffed with little random gifts. They are always the most fun, and often the most remembered. The first Christmas we were together we didn’t have stockings, and the second Christmas, my BFF, The Connoisseur, gave me a bitchin’ giraffe faux fur stocking which I adore. But Sweetums had no stocking, so this year I had to remedy that. I set out scouring Etsy.com and finally found a scrap of navy blue and black faux fur that I loved. But I still didn’t have the fabric for the stocking itself. Finally, I found this cool dragon fabric which screams “boy”. I had the listing altered to be for 1/2 a yard instead of a 1/4, paid up and was thrilled at how well they went together when both both arrived over the next few days. Anyway, long story short, I quilted some batting onto the dragon fabric, then laid the two piece together, busted out a magic marker, and traced out my giraffe stocking on it with about 3/4th of an inch room around it. I cut the two pieces out, stitched them together, and that was the easy part. Then I cut (had to re-cut once) the faux fur ruff and stitched it on with the hanging loop, also made out of the stocking fabric. Sewed it all of inside out. Spent 1/2 hour picking out the seam which was a bitch because the stitches really sunk into the batting. Finally realized duh! Right side + wrong side together for this, not rights + right, and got it finished correctly. I think it turned out great! And its the perfect size for all the little stocking stuffers I got him! The only hard part once I sorted out my errors was getting my machine through a layer of batting, cotton fabrics, and the fuax fur which has like a 3/4? pile to it. I reallly had to help it along and it was very slow going. But considering how much I’ve used this machine for in the last year+, and this has been the only real rough spot- I LOVE my Janome! Want to order one for next year? Leave me a comment describing what you’re looking for or use the contact form to drop me a line with the same, and I’ll get you a quote as quickly as possible. Cost is dependent upon materials. This one cost me about $15.00 to make due to buying the two fabrics from different shops and having to pay shipping twice. If I were selling it, the price would be about $22.00 to give you an idea. Also, check out this link to try and win a $100 gift card for Amazon.com every year for life! http://appsumoforlife.com/~76kR (Appsumo is who is giving it away.) This is one of my problem drawings. I can identify an elephant, yes, but draw one? Ha! That’s funny! Like hilarious! I drew the first draft of this totally freehand, not using any references. This time though, I Googled an elephant photo that was in more or less the same pose and saw some serious errors in my first drawing. The neck was too long and the line of the back was totally off. I think I have that fixed, as well as the color being a bit more realistic now. I also made the eyes smaller, though eventually they will need redone completely. Just added this to my Etsy.com shop. Its made up of beautiful Swarovski cystals and pearls connected to the bracelet chain by jump rings, anchored on paddle pins. Price is $15.00 plus shipping. I just completed my second flat spiral stitch bracelet, this one with candy pinks, purples, and blues. Instead of using the 4mm beads to make the center of each arch, I set them into the ends of each arch. It uses twice as many, but I had to do it in order to use the big round beads I chose because the round beads have holes big enough to swallow my seed beads. I really like the way it turned out too. The first picture isn’t terribly clear, but the second one you can see the details nicely. I have an absolutely gorgeous bracelet I made years ago, but didn’t quite finish. Unfortunately, between then and now, I sold off a large part of my bead stash, and got rid of some of the colors that I needed for it. I have two of the 4 colors of seed beads I was using for it, and I believe I still have more of the pink and yellow fire-polish beads (I think they are Czech fire-polish anyway) that I used as accents, but the other two colors I used on it are anyone’s guess. I’m currently on my bead supplier’s website trying to decide what color the ones I need to finish this up are, but not having much luck narrowing it down to a final choice. One I have it narrowed down to three options, the other, I’m not even sure if the ones I am looking at are the right type of bead. I think it’s a color-lined bead, but I can’t tell if its a rainbow finish or not, and what if its a ceylon? I just can’t tell. I know, there are right in fornt of me, but one single bead of that color by itself is a mighty small sample to try to match from. When my boyfriend comes in, I’m going to ask him what he thinks of the color. “Blue” is not taking me far enough in this, but I really want to finish this bracelet up so I can wear it with pride and not always feel like hiding the incomplete end under my wrist. Our anniversary is coming up- get an identity package including logo, business card layout, letterhead, and a web page design for $250.00! This would normally cost at least $400 for this package. Logo design will have three initial concepts, plus up to five revisions. Web page design will have one initial concept, and up to ten revisions. It does not include coding- design only. Please see the menu at the top of the page to see samples of my work and further details of how I do things around here. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask me. I will answer as quickly as possible. This great deal will run until the end of this month. I was out at my Mom’s house Friday night and found some old jewelry I had made some time back. One of them caught my eye as the perfect thing to wear to the wedding I am going to tonight. It is a chunky necklace made out of fat wooden beads, and a strip of old t-shirt material. If you ever do any crafting, you probably already have everything you need on hand to do this. The construction is super simple. Take an old t-shirt in whatever color you want your necklace or choker to be, and cut a strip that is about 6 to 8 inches longer then the length you want it to be, and wide enough to wrap around your beads twice. You don’t want to skimp on the width because otherwise your beads might fall out. If your beads have a circumference of 2 inches, you’ll want the fabric strip to be 4 inches wide. Starting in the middle, lay one bead down and roll the width of the fabric around it. Take a piece of narrow ribbon and tie it in a knot next to the bead. Do this on each side of it. I left my tails long and dangling, but you could cut them off and secure the knots with a dab of hot glue. Work your way along the length of the strip, adding beads and ribbon until you have as many as you’d like. To wear it, just tie the ends of the fabric behind your neck. You could dress it up using other fabric types too. Excuse my really awful picture, I just got out of the shower when I decided to post this and I look a little like a wet rat.
I won’t be using the rainbow color scheme, but am thinking starting black on the top, and working my way through the grey spectrum to end in a white layer on the bottom tier, and am thinking about edging it with a scalloped lace to finish it off. The hard part will be finding enough different shades of grey to work my way through the spectrum, but the good thing will be I will only need a half a yard or so of each color. Hopefully I can find a good diversity of patterns to keep it interesting to the eye. Not sure about the waistband yet, and what color I am going to do it- white would be a logical choice to balance the white bottom, but at the same time, I think it would also be a great time to add a color into it- maybe a black and red polka dotted fabric, or black and purple. Hard decisions abound! I’ll be sure to take many photos of the progress once I get started and post them. Its been a while since I’ve had a fun sewing project to work on. Now if only I had a sewing machine here at the house.
Hopefully I’ll have another doodle up soon trying out another tool that looks fun. |
